ABOUT US

The Environmental Information Centre was established in 2001 by the Minister of the Environment in order to provide information about the environment and its protection. Our activity is addressed to society as a whole and to individual groups, such as entrepreneurs or public employees. The primary activity of the Centre is the collection development and publication of information. Our tool for presenting information about the environment and communicating with the public is the Ekoportal website, where we try to disseminate reliable information and present it in a readable, user-friendly and attractive manner as possible. We strive to ensure that the most important environmental information is available to the public via a single location on the Internet.

Our task is also dissemination of meta-information, i.e. knowledge about what information is held by government bodies dealing with environmental issues. On Ekoportal, meta-information is available, inter alia, in the metadata database (a publicly available register of data on documents containing information about the environment and its protection), where the data is included by authorities at various levels throughout Poland (currently, more than 1,300 offices and growing).

In addition to this, the Centre disseminates information about current, relevant topics on ecology and environmental protection on a national scale, including through information campaigns, such as the nationwide information campaign entitled Genetically modified organisms and the natural environment, which was conducted in 2008-2009, and a campaign implemented in 2010 disseminating the EMAS environmental management system among entrepreneurs. The Centre has also implemented training projects, using traditional methods and e-learning - Online courses made available through Ekoportal to all interested users. We also provide, upon request, any environmental information held by the Minister of the Environment.

The Centre’s motto is: You have a right to know and use what you know!

We hope that our efforts will better contribute to raising public awareness on sustainable development and thus improve the environment.
